In 1948, Alice and Jasper met in a small diner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania… When Alice explained her vision of the Cullens to Jasper, he found it hard to believe that such a lifestyle existed. Nevertheless they sought them out and joined them in 1950. Twilight, Chapter 23: The Angel
"I’m a naturally pretty shy person, wich I’m cool with now. I used to think it was this affliction I had to overcome”
Wouldn’t Edward, indifferent as he might be, want me to be as happy as possible under the circumstances? Wouldn’t enough friendly emotion linger for him to want that much for me? I thought he would. He wouldn’t begrudge me this: giving just a small bit of love he didn’t want to my friend Jacob. After all, it wasn’t the same love at all
And then, clear as if I were in immediate danger, Edward’s velvet voice whispered in my ear. "Be happy," he told me.
This quote is pivotal because throughout the book it is repeatedly reinforced that Bella’s hallucinations are much more accurate than her conscious memory. And here we see that, even while she questions if Edward would even care about her misery, her subconscious comes through shockingly clear. He wants her to be happy, with or without him. And, at some level, she finally sees that.
